Stefan Schumacher wins the Time Trial and takes Yellow!
posted by id* at 06:45 PM on July 08, 2008
Racing with motivation and urgency unexpected by his competitors Germany's Stefan Schumacher took over the lead of the Tour de France today with a command performance in the stage four Individual Time Trial.
The Gerolsteiner rider posted the fastest time at each of the checkpoints en route to a 35:44 time in the 29.5km individual TT. He finished 18 seconds up on surprising second place finisher Kim Kirchen of Team Columbia and David Millar of Garmin-Chipotle.
When asked about his ambitions to keep the jersey Schumacher says:
"I will give all to defend the jersey," he said. "When I was up there on the podium to receive the maillot jaune, my hair was standing on end. I felt good on the bike today and because the distance wasn’t so long, I was able to maintain a good rhythm throughout the course. Tomorrow is a stage for the sprinters, so I will try to defend the jersey at Super-Besse. I’m not climber, but that climb to Super-Besse is one that suits my characteristics."
Congratulations to Stefan for a fantastic finish and we'll look for him tomorrow in yellow on his Specialized Tarmac SL2!

It must have been the new TT3 helmet that pushed him over the edge into hyperspeed!
