Bike to Work Week Challenge

posted by id* at 02:59 PM on May 12, 2008

Anyone can ride to work! Anywhere...

Specialized joins The League of American Bicyclists in promoting Bike-to-Work Week this week and we want to encourage you to take part.  May is National Bike Month and we are focused on letting as many people know about it as possible.

At Specialized we ride to work as often as we can and this week at the Riders Club we will be talking with people everyday about their experience riding to work.  Follow us this week to see how many miles you can rack up and how many we do.

Here are some amazing stats about how much cycling can help us cut down on pollution, carbon emissions and gridlock!  Do your part - don't pollute; bike commute!

At the Riders Club we will be putting up daily updates and would love it if you would too... follow us as we bike to work this week!

Bicycles and Clean Air

• Commuting by bicycle produces zero pollution.

• If people rode a bicycle instead of using a motor vehicle for trips of less than two miles, the majority of motor vehicle pollution would be prevented.

• Motor vehicle emissions represent 31% of total carbon dioxide, 81% of carbon monoxide, and 49% of nitrogen oxides released in the U.S.

• Approximately 40% of all trips are less than 2 miles in length – which represents a 10-minute bike ride or a 30-minute walk.

• A short, four-mile round trip by bicycle keeps about 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air we breathe.

Bicycles are Better than Cars

• 100 calories can power a cyclist for three miles.

• 100 calories can power a car 280 feet.

• About 12 bicycles can be parked in the space required for one car.

• Traffic jams in the 29 major cities cost commuters an estimated $24.3 billion annually (and makes them grouchy).

• The number of US bicycle commuters doubled between 1983 and 1990.

• More than half of all Americans live less than 5 miles from where they work.

Started riding to work this week. Found a 5.5 mile route, but it required me to cross a busy road without hopes of ever getting a light. Using the city bike trail for most of my trip makes the trip about 9 miles.

I'm disappointed in the city for having intersections that can't be crossed because a bike can't get the light to change. On the positive side, I like the trail better anyway, the extra distance doesn't take that much longer, and I get to rack up more miles.

I started riding to work with two of my friends. I love it. I teach so I am off over the summer. I do plan on riding in the fall until it gets too cold.
