10th March 2008 - Today, Monday, 10th March 2008 Gert Steegmans won the first stage of the Paris-Nice race which which should have been 184.5 kilometres long from Amilly to Nevers but was reduced to just 74 kilometres due to strong winds.
The Belgian QUICK STEP Team athlete beat across the finish line Frenchman Jerome Pineau (Boygues Telecom) and Norwegian Tor Hushovd (Credit Agricole)
“The stage was shortened due to strong winds – says Steegmans - but this element actually helped me in my victory. At about 40 kilometres from the finish my team mates and I managed to create a fan-formation that took itself and a small group with 5 QUICK STEP athletes up to the finish line. As well as myself Tosatto, Garate, Cretskens and Efimkin were along with me. My team mates did an extraordinary job in taking me up to the final sprint in the best conditions possible. I am really pleased, it was our objective to win the first stage and we did”.
20 kilometres into the race Belgian athlete Kevin Hulsmans fell grazing his left arm and leg.“I’ve got a few bumps and bruises – Hulsmans said – but I’ll definitely be on the start line tomorrow”
This is Steegman’s 2nd win of the season and the 11th for the QUICK STEP Team.
