Suspension Setup Tips

posted by RoubaixRider at 03:56 PM on April 18, 2007

Our friends over at specialized.com have just launched a new suspension setup guide for the Enduro SL that includes a video of our Suspension Director and shock rockstar Mike McAndrews.  In the video, he can be seen discussing suspension development with our racers, and talking about how to setup the suspension on our Enduro SL.  Check it out, let us know what you think!

Which is stiffest? Left or right? When you can see the S or the F?
What do S and F stand for?
Soft and Full?

Great to hear that the video is helping you out. To answer your question, the rear suspension is most firm when the blue compression knob is turned to the right. (You see the F facing up.)

Yo SquidBuzz, much of the info in the Enduro SL video is applicable to your Epic. Sag set-up, rebound adjustment, etc., are all the same prinicples for your bike. The only thing you need to be aware of for sag set-up is that to reach your sag point, you need to stay seatedon teh bike for 10 or 15 seconds (because the Brain makes settling into the sag point slower.) if you have any specific questions, fire away.

Rusty, thanks for the help. I was just wondering if the fork and shock initial settings would be the same since the geometries are slightly different between the two bikes.

Hello! First, excuse me by my English elementary one.

The future fork e150 SL loses air after to be reduced to 110 mm of travelling.

What happens? Thanks.

Great explanation! I agree with some of the other riders. A lot of development went into the BRAIN, a short clip on setting the sag would help the non engineers out there. And a short discussion on tuning your ride with respect to the locking feature. Cheers!

Specialized will be making vids for all upcoming 2008 suspension models. The DVD/steaming video will be available on-line OR come with the bike when you buy one.

Squidbuzz - sorry fo the slow response. . . been busy. For sag on your Epic, you shoudl run about 20% of total travel in sag front and rear. i.e. 20mm. To get to 20%, start at the pressure you believe you should run. Push the tavel o-rings to the seal on the fork and shock. sit on the bike and wait for about 10 seconds. Smoothly dismount. Measure the distance from the seal to the o-ring. if it's more than 20mm, put a few poound more pressure in. If it's less than 20mm, take a few PSI out. push the o-rings to teh seals and repeat the process untill you get to 20mm.

Boyd - the only major adjust on teh brain itself is the "BrainFade" blue knob. This lets you dial-in how firm or plush the Brain is on smooth terrain. If you want ultiamte efficiency, turn it full clockwise. If you want the plushest ride, turn it all teh way the counter-clockwise. Most find somewhere in between suits their fancy.

Limey - The travel adjust side of your E150 fork is the air spring. There is a bit of oil inside that leg, but it is unlikely that it woud weep out. More likely is that some of the oil used externally for assemply has become visible. If you have not lost air pressure, then you don't have an issue.

Rusty kogs-The weeping oil issue is a known fault, my Enduro does it and Specialized are changing the Travel adjust cartridge on my bike, according to Spesh they say its simply a nicked seal when the fork was assembled, other issues are creaking, fixed by removing old threadlock and re-torqueing the bolts and the fork sticking in the lower travel position ,again a newer travel adjust cartridge will sort it.
Those guys at Specialized are sooo helpful.

I bought an Enduro SL comp last week.

my e150 fork has basically a complete loss of air after about 48 hours. also, the rebound even on the fastest setting feels a smidge too slow.

the compression dial on the afr shock does almost nothing. the difference between full soft and full firm is very small. overall the shock is very firm at recommended psi for my weight and does not react very well or at all to small bumps and chatter bumps. I have not tried a lower psi, but even still, I would like my compression damper to work :)

Hi, Top tube the loss of air can be sorted by a warranty replacement of your air chamber but as for the suspension feel it took my bike 2 months of riding for the fork and shock to bed in, now its far plusher plus you need to leave youe bike upside down over night every once in a while to allow fork oil to top up the lube on the seals.

All this SL fork stuff is all too familiar. Exactly the same experinces i.e. replaced top tube/loss of air in "climb" setting/odd noises/no apparent change in compression upon adjustment etc. Have not tried storing up-side down yet. My local dealer where I purchased is helpful but a little unsure: early days I suppose. Difficult to know what to expect from 6incher but I did sell a very nice 2007 FSR Stumpy with Fox on it to get this bike! Enduro is in another class obviously but shame about the fork when I consider how good the spike valve rear shock is.

So far i cant fault the bike on performance but the reliability issues are begining to annoy. It would be good to see posts reporting owners experiences with this bike.

Dont say that SL Rider - I've been raving on about how good the rear shock is in these posts! Have today experienced 1st hand spesh's customer service directly as opposed to through the dealer. 1st class/very helpful. Addressed the lack of rebound control by telling me a little trick - admiteddly against the advice of the manual, but I didnt just say that! I know what you mean about reliability but from what I've heard the grass isnt much greener elsewhere and at least we've got 1st class support.
