Kona Ironman preview...
posted by id* at 10:39 AM on October 12, 2007
With 24 hours to go before the start of the 2007 Ironman World Championship here in Kona the favorites have all been analyzed, talked about, previewed and followed as they prepared for the race. We spent some time with “Macca” as he got ready this week and got a preview of his bike, his strategy and his focus for this year’s big show.
Race week usually brings big nerves and high tensions, but not for Macca; he’s been here for two weeks already and says he’s as relaxed as he’s ever been and ready for Saturday’s race. After his blistering 7:54 at Roth this year, Macca has been focusing on getting ready for this year’s race – his new Specialized Transition has been put through the paces and is ready to go.
We were lucky enough to be invited along for his final tune up ride on Wednesday and we headed out onto the Queen K for 2 hours of moderate pace riding – that is moderate pace for Macca of course - so damn fast for the rest of us… Macca rode his Transition easily for about 35 miles and smiled for our cameras as the crew rode with him.
For you tech-o-philes we’ll have a full bike report on Macca equipment selection but as you can see he’s chosen to run a shallow front wheel (Dura-Ace) and a deep rear wheel (an 85mm Gravity Zero). His aero bars are from Profile and he runs a Dura-Ace 10-speed group-set.
Stay tuned for more Riders Club direct Kona updates as we follow the race all day tomorrow!
