Innovate or Die Ride to Interbike - Day 5
posted by rusty nations at 01:16 PM on September 19, 2007
To a rider, every face looked puffy and more than a little exhausted this morning when the call for microwaved oatmeal came at 5:15. Thankfully, Nancy, the cooking and driving half of our support crew, had the foresight to pack a few pounds of Peet’s which made it a whole lot easier to rally every morning—gold star for Nancy. The last leg of our trip had been slightly complicated by a need to arrive in Las Vegas by 11:00AM. So we saddled up and rode out as the sun was rising over Nellis Air Force Range.
Chris D. and Don L. assumed their position at the front of our group of six with Randy, Mark, Mike and myself happy to let them do the work for the final three or four or five hours. Whatever it took for us to get out to Boulder City and Interbike’s Dirt Demo by 11. As we drew closer to the end, the tempo got to be pretty quick. 30-plus miles-per-hour in the half-dozen miles that we rode on Route 95. With the semis, shuttle busses and steady steam of cars they were thrilling miles for sure.
When we arrived the entire Specialized team had a reception arranged for us—complete with a red carpet and champagne. A great end to an epic adventure. Hopefully the message that we’ve sent by riding close to 600-miles in five days instead of hopping in our cars or on a plane is one that will raise some level of awareness surrounding global climate change and the innovative pedal powered solutions that will help to cut CO2 emissions and slow the warming of the planet.
You don’t have to ride 600-miles to make a difference. If you hop on two wheels instead of driving four the next time that you’re heading to the store, out to dinner or even to pick your boy or girl up from school, you’ll be helping to stop global climate change. Ride on and be sure to join us next year on the ‘Innovate or Die Express.’ We’re already planning on riding the northern route through Yosemite.

I enjoyed reading about this trip and looking at the photos but give me lush green landscapes in Europe anytime over Death Valley! Are you riding back as well, or was that enough microwaved oatmeal?

OK, I'm not letting this pass me by next year. Come hell or high water, I'm in. Training started yesterday, 360 days to go... Ugh. Any nightriders from the Supergo nightriding crew wanna join, I can set you up in San Jose for the start....
